Zomato recently introduced its "Food Rescue" initiative aimed at reducing food waste by offering canceled orders at discounted prices. When a customer cancels an order, the food becomes available for others nearby at a reduced rate. Users within a 3-kilometer radius receive a notification about the discounted meal, which they can claim quickly. This initiative is Zomato’s solution to the problem of food waste, especially given that over 400,000 orders are canceled each day on the platform.
The Food Rescue plan ensures that the proceeds go directly to the restaurant and the original customer (minus government taxes), while Zomato itself takes no profit from these sales. Additionally, only food that matches a customer’s dietary preferences will appear, and perishable items are excluded to maintain quality standards. CEO Deepinder Goyal highlighted this move as a significant step toward sustainability and resource efficiency in food delivery.
