With the Union government driving home the judicial impossibility of disentangling the Special Marriage Act from the web of personal laws for legalising same-sex marriages, the Supreme Court asked the Centre what administrative measures could be taken to improve the day-to-day lives of same-sex couples. “Short of marriage rights... what can the government do for long cohabiting couples? They need some recognition for creating conditions for their social security and welfare," the SC said.
