A notice to Mr Gandhi to vacate the 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow was served by the Housing Committee of Lok Sabha following his disqualification last week after a Surat court convicted and sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark. Will Challenge "Erroneous" Judgment: Congress On Rahul Gandhi Conviction

The conviction of Rahul Gandhi by a Surat court in a defamation case was "erroneous and unsustainable" and will be challenged in a higher court, the Congress said on Thursday while expressing hope that the judgment will be stayed and quashed. Mr Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail by the court in the 2019 criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark, in a setback to the Lok Sabha MP who faces the risk of disqualification. The case was filed against him on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the trial court has given a 170-page judgment that is still subject to translation and the party is working towards filing an appeal against it in a higher court. "We believe that this is full of errors and legally unsustainable in conclusion. But make no mistake generally...all your (government's) efforts to create

Mercedes, Bus Collide In Uttar Pradesh, 7 Injured

An Uttar Pradesh roadways bus and a speeding Mercedes-Benz car collided on a road in Greater Noida on Thursday, leaving seven people injured, police said. The luxury car was hit from behind when the two vehicles were near the Hindon flyover at the Knowledge Park area around 1 pm, they said. Citing eyewitness accounts, police said the car was moving at a fast pace and after overtaking the bus, its driver applied brakes suddenly causing the collision. "The drivers of the Mercedes-Benz and the roadways bus suffered injuries in the crash and were taken to the Jaypee Hospital for treatment. Five occupants of the bus received minor injuries and were discharged soon,” a local police official said. Police identified the injured car driver as Raghav Gupta, a businessman living in Greater Noida, while the bus driver is Nisaar Khan, a native of Agra. Gupta was headed to his factory in the phase 2 area of Noida while the bus was on its way to Delhi from Agra, police said. (Except for th

Attempt To "Suppress" Opposition: Sharad Pawar On Rahul Gandhi's Jail Term

NCP supremo Sharad Pawar came out in support of Rahul Gandhi on Thursday, saying his conviction in a criminal defamation case was an attempt to "suppress the voice" of opposition leaders. Mr Pawar also drew parallels between the conviction of Gandhi and NCP leader and former Lok Sabha member from Lakshadweep PP Mohammed Faizal, who was disqualified from the lower house after his conviction in an attempt-to-murder case. "I express my serious concerns at the attempts to curtail fundamental rights, freedom of speech and democratic expression in the country. The repeated attempts to suppress the voice of political parties, leaders and citizens of India is a matter of grave concern," Mr Pawar said. "Today's judgment of Rahul Gandhi underscores the point. NCP MP PP Mohammed Faizal's case is also a similar case in point. I deplore this new trend in our political landscape, which should concern everyone in today's scenario," the Rajya Sabha member s

Court Tells Tax Department To Reply On Kapil Sibal's Challenge To Notice

The Delhi High Court on Thursday restrained the Income Tax Department from proceeding further on the show cause notice issued to Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal in relation to the assessment proceedings pending against him. A bench of Justice Rajiv Shakdher and Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju issued a notice and asked the income tax authorities to file a response on the petition of the former Congress leader. "We are of the view that since the impugned notice has been challenged on jurisdiction as well as on the breach of principles of natural justice, it would require some amount of deliberation," the bench said. "In the meanwhile, the concerned officer will stay his hands vis-a-vis the show cause notice of March 11, 2023," it added. The court listed the matter for further hearing on September 14 and asked the officer concerned to first deal with the objections of Mr Sibal. Kapil Sibal has challenged the notice issued by the IT department under Secti
